Cracker home design uniquely suited to local climate and isolated settlers of this country take advantage of abundant nativeforests of Southern Yellow Pine in their construction. Pine heart wood, is now rare in the age of logging and timber plantations, can be destroyed by pests or decay almost, and is used even for foundation blocks placed directly on the ground.This image shows a typical cracker-style house in northern Florida. Note the wrap-around porch and a hip-style tin roof. At the rear is a separate kitchen. The house sits on blocks about two feet off the ground.
